Surprising Anxiety Triggers You Never Knew Could Fuel Your Symptoms
Anxiety can feel unpredictable. Some days you’re calm and in control. Other days, your heart is pounding, your thoughts racing, and you can’t figure out why.
While work stress, financial pressure, and major life changes are well-known anxiety triggers, some causes are less obvious.
Certain habits, environmental factors, and health conditions can fuel your anxiety without you realizing it. When these triggers go unnoticed, anxiety may seem to appear out of nowhere, making it harder to manage.
At Reviv Functional Psychiatry & TMS Wellness Center in Fullerton, California, our experienced psychiatrist, Dr. Hina Sidhu, takes a holistic approach to managing mental health.
This approach considers lifestyle factors, environmental influences, and physical health when diagnosing and treating anxiety disorders.
Could unexpected triggers fuel your anxiety? Here are a few possibilities.
Skipping meals
Skipping meals may seem like a harmless time-saver, but it can lead to drops in blood sugar that affect mood and thinking. There’s a reason “hangry” has become so popular.
When you go too long without eating, blood sugar levels drop, triggering irritability, shakiness, and anxiety. Eating at regular intervals (every 3-4 hours) helps keep blood sugar steady.
Balanced meals that include healthy proteins, fats, and complex carbohydrates provide your body with the right mix of nutrients it needs to maintain energy levels.
It’s also recommended to limit high-sugar foods, which can cause rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar that may worsen anxiety symptoms.
Too much caffeine
Are you drinking more coffee than usual? Too much caffeine can also cause unexpected anxiety.
Caffeine is a stimulant that affects the nervous system. In higher amounts, it can cause:
- Rapid heartbeat
- Jitteriness
- Sweating
- Restlessness
- Sensations that mimic or worsen anxiety
Research suggests that consuming more than 400 milligrams a day may increase the risk of anxiety. day. For reference, one cup of coffee has about 100 to 200 milligrams of caffeine.
If you find yourself reaching for another cup of coffee to help you get through the afternoon slump, consider a glass of water instead. Dehydration can contribute to fatigue and may also worsen feelings of anxiety.
Clutter or overstimulation
Your environment can also affect your mental health. A cluttered home or workspace can overwhelm the brain. Piles of unfinished tasks and disorganization may act as a constant visual reminder of your responsibilities, triggering feelings of guilt or stress.
Research suggests that clutter may increase levels of stress hormones, potentially contributing to irritability and anxiety over time.
Sensory overload can also play a role. Loud noises, bright lights, and constant notifications from your phone can overstimulate the nervous system.
When your brain is bombarded with too much information all at once, it may respond with restlessness, tension, and heightened anxiety.
Small changes can make a big difference. You don’t have to organize your entire house all at once. Start decluttering one small area at a time or create a dedicated space in your home that feels calm and uncluttered.
Reduce stimulation by silencing unnecessary phone notifications, taking regular screen breaks, and creating a more relaxing environment with soft lights and comfortable furniture.
Hormone changes
Hormones are also involved in regulating mood and emotional health. Shifts in hormone levels can sometimes trigger or worsen anxiety.
Women may notice increased anxiety at certain times of the menstrual cycle, as well as during perimenopause or menopause when hormone levels fluctuate.
Thyroid hormone imbalances, whether levels are up or down, may also cause symptoms such as nervousness, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating.
Hormonal changes aren’t limited to women. Decreasing testosterone in men can also affect mood, energy, and mental clarity.
Anxiety is a normal human emotion. However, it becomes a concern when it’s persistent, overwhelming, or interferes with your ability to get through your daily routine.
